Spiced Gin Fizz

Childhood memories are a very powerful thing, especially those that involve taste. Root beer will always remind me of childhood and my father. Soft drinks were the occasional treat so they were elevated to a status few other things shared. As an adult I still love root beer and gravitate towards some of the more complex micro brewed varieties. The spiciness of some these really adds a completely different flavor to some of your favorite drinks.

Ingredients

  • 1 ounce lemon juice
  • 1½ teaspoon maple syrup
  • 4 ounces high quality root beer (I like Virgil’s)
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 star anise (for garnish)

Preparation

Add gin, lemon juice, and maple syrup to a shaker without ice. Give it a good stir with a bar spoon, add the egg white, and dry shake vigorously for at least 1 minute. Add ice to the shaker and shake for another 30 seconds. Strain into a chilled rocks glass. Carefully pour root beer into the drink. Give it a gentle stir and garnish with a star anise pod.
